think i blew my motor. need advice

car is a 97 a4 2.8 car was over heating (from a cracked water pump) while driving then the car shut off. i waited an hour till it cooled and it wouldnt turn over. if the motor is gone what should i do? where should i look for a motor? or should i have this one rebuilt? any info or ideas would be great.

Ouch.

Getting the right motor sucks if going through a junk yard. Some lady had gone through a field or something and poked a hole in her oil filter and then got back on the road and kept driving untill the engine seized. Her insurance company would not buy her a new engine, instead a junk yard one. We went through 3 of them before we got one that was either correct or not blown. The one that was finally usuable was from a VW so many parts had to be swapped over. Car sat on our lot for months.

would rebuild be my best bet?

do you think just the head is done for or the whole block. oil temp hit 300.

Can't say without seeing it.

If it won't crank now good chance the motor locked but it's a hard call without digging into it. I don't know of any rebuild kits for that engine but that's not to say they don't exist.

thanks russ, im think im going to buy another a4

dont really wanna pay for someone to get in there and tell me everything is shot.
anyone wanna buy an a4 with a possible blown motor?

Blown= over-rev'ed Yours is siezed from over heat

Blown engines have metal bits all over from a fraged crank, rod, pistion, cam, dropped valve.

Overheating is siezed. Yours costs a bunch to 'fix' - free the pistons, bore it out and rebuild. Does the 2.8 have aluminum heads? Usually they warp when they get too hot. Finding another car is a good bet. Checking junkyards for a total with a good engine is something to browse for. Check ebay?
