what is the difference between 996 and a GT2???

996 is the chassis designation, GT2 is a variant of the 996 chassis
like the audi "b5" chassis/series of cars had both the a4 1.8T, the a4 2.8, and the S4 variants....(among others)
That is why the newly redesigned Porsches are all variants of the 997 designation (the new carrera S, carrera, etc)

my thoughts, but needed a concrete answer.
i walked out of my girlfriends place this morning, and there was a 996 race car sitting in the driveway next to hers. I stopped and talked to the guy cause he was having a yard sale, he told me it was a GT2 w/twin garretts. I didnt say anything to him but i thought that sounded funny. mommy and daddy bought it for him, kids 23 and has it for a track car. *sigh*

So he had a Porsche GT2 with upgraded turbos right? even though the car is technically a 996 series porsche, people usually refer to them by their model designations (i.e. i would tell someone i drive an S4, saying "B6 S4" only really makes sense to people who know audis. That might explain why he didnt say 996. Sorry i am probably totally missing your point here

that is insane though...he must be one hell of a driver as stock GT2's are enough of a handful on the track as is....throw some donkey turbos on there and...well...wow
