Default Anyone catch the article in this month's C&D on diesels?

Great summary article on the state of affairs with diesels in the US.

And a quoted 0-60 in 6.2 seconds for the V10 TDI Touareg and 24 mpg?! Tempting!

Also noticed that Touareg TDI finally is up on www.kbb.com for pricing. It really makes you wonder what a TDI Pike's Peak will be going for...<ul><li><a href="http://www.kbb.com">Touareg TDI pricing for US</a></li></ul>

Default Looks like it must be priced by weight...

Optioned up similar to my ar, it's almost 64k sticker! That's crazy money - it makes the ar seem like a bargain...

Too bad the V10 TDI isn't an option in the allroad :-)

Default Might be economical...if gas hits $5 a gallon

Even with 50% better mileage, it'll take a looong time to get back the $10K+ premium for the smudge pot with fuel savings. And somehow I don't think the very complex new TDI's are gonna be nearly as bullet proof as the simple "old fashioned" diesels that run forever. Now, if they imported the TDI V6, it could make economic sense. The V10 seems just another example of chasing the conspicuous consumer.

Default The V10 TDI is the most expensive engine that VW/Audi makes.

I've read reports that the manufacturing per unit cost for this engine is over $10,000. That's just the cost, not the price if you were to buy this engine outright. Given the inversion of the dollar/euro ratio since that engine was designed, I would wager that the cost may be over $15k right now.

This engine shares parts only a few parts with the R5 that was derived from the VR6, and uses the latest in clean diesel technology. The other Touareg engines are borrowed from existing designs, with the 3.2 V6 being the latest VR6, and the 4.2 V8 being the same engine as in our beloved allroad 4.2. Since these other engines have long been developed, they don't cost nearly as much to produce.

Actually, at $60,000, we're getting off cheap. In England, the V10 model runs at £65,000, which converts to about $123,000 at today's exchange rate. $102,000 if you remove the VAT.

Are you sure, thought that the 65000 number was the ABT fully modified?

Default Pretty sure. The initial MSRP including VAT was £65k, when it was introduced.

It was listed in a british car magazine I was perusing at the local Borders. I'll see if I can dig up some online source.
