Default OEM thermostat is 87 degrees Celcius...does it make any sense to run a lower temp thermostat?

like 80C or even the lowest available at 71C?

What applications would benefit from this, if any?

Default from what i can remember my mechanic use to say that these cars can run on 100oC...

so 87 seems ok.Lower,i think means slightly more gas consumption

Default Run the 87.

I ran the lower one for a weeks in the Coupe (before I knew better). Mileage went down, heat was weak in the winter, no performance gains. 87 is fine on the hottest day in summer.

Default Depends where you live

I am in Mass, in the summer I run the 80C, cause you can get stuck in Boston traffic for a while, and when the temp gauge goes past halfway, my motor runs like ****. In the cold months, I run the 87C. Now i also switch the fan switch out with the thermostat. So I would say if you live somewhere hot, then run the 80C, in the middle like me switch it with the season, and if Your in Canada, then stay with the 87C or higher.

One other thing that will affect temp is whether you have you belly pan on or off.

And yes fuel mileage does go down somewhat, but its worth not overheating you engine on a hot, trafficky day.

Sry just realized your in NY, run the 87C for the winter, and if you want switch in a 80C in the late spring early summer.

Default problem with this is...........

that by running the cooler one, you car will still be running a richer mixture because it thinks that it is not fully warmed up, hence the poor mileage.

Default last i recall the water temp sensor is 87c

if you ran your thermo at higher or lower it might throw it off and you will have issues.
the thermo on the V6 is not in a nice spot so changing it out yearly would be a real pain. I have never seen anything other then the 87c thermo for sale, but they might offer it at a dealer?
want a cooler engine, slap some redline water wetter in it, my temp gauge never goes over the heavy dash at about 9 o'clock and usually depending on the temp outside runs at the click below it.
