Potential First-Time Audi Owner...
Hi there,
I'm going to be looking for a new car and I've got my eye on a 1999 1.8T. I don't suppose anyone could direct me to any buyer's guide-type info as well as general info about bad years, trouble spots as well as recommending any "essential" performance mods. Oh, any advice on what I should expect to pay? (50,000 miles) THANKS for any help you could give me. I live in Portland if there are any locals around.

Check out www.consumerguide.com under automotive and used cars. They give a break-down by year and some reviews. I think your looking at a great year. Right before they emploted drive by wire in the A4's. I'm not sure if the interior has been updated yet, though. Might want to look that up.

Get a manual...
the 99.5 is the best year, and if its reasonably priced BUY IT. There are more mods than you can count for the 1.8T. For like $1600 you can get a K04 turbo kit from AWE tuning that will make like 235hp and 265lb ft of torque.

99.5 = new climate control, old stereo
If that's what you meant by interior. I have looked at tons of A4s on eBay. The 99.5 still had the old radio with tape and optional CD in trunk, but the new climate control with integrated heated seat switches.

I believe I have a 99.5 A4 2.8, but can someone tell me for sure. The car was manufactured in March of 99 and it has the updated dash - the radio has a tape deck in the dash with CD in the trunk. However, I read somewhere that the 99.5s come standard with a trip computer (I do not have) and have a digital clock (mine has the analog unit). Also, how do I tell if it has a sports package (I have a sport steering wheel and the 16 inch 7 spoke alloy wheels - not the ones with the Audi logo lugnut cover). Is there an easy way to tell?

I just bought my a4 after driving dads S4....
I have the sport package and mine handles better. So that's a must have!
I bought mine from a private seller in Chicago. I paid $16k for a 98 with Sport and Winter Packages with 30k miles. If you're buying from a dealer, a '99 with similar miles should go for a grand or so more. At least in Northern Ohio. (comparing our prices seem average with the rest of the country).
