Some info
Got around to pulling the instrument cluster on my 4kq. The odometer/speedo was quite easy to take out. My plastic gear (suprise!) is still intact. However, the whole shaft had slid out away from the worm gear, losing contact. I just pushed it back in.
Also, my passenger door handle hasn't been working right for years. When I would pull on it, the catch wouldn't release and eventually got to the point requiring me to open from the inside. I pulled the door panel, and found out the actuator rod had 'bowed' out some shortening it enough to keep the catch from releasing. Pliers fixed THAT nonsense.
Lastly, my LR window quit. Once again, just like the drivers door, the wires at the hinge had pinched themselves in half over the years. Rewired, works fine now. This happened to my trunk as well. Hey, I invite you guys to take a couple minutes and check YOUR wires...you might be suprised. This is why my mirrors quit too.

that shaft is going to pop right back out in a couple hundred miles, BTDT
the way i have fixed this is scrape the shaft and
the plastic up lightly with a small screwdriver
apply superglue and push back in place.
There, fixed.

Hmm
You say apply glue. To what? The metal shaft is simply sliding out from the inside of the speedo. The plastic gear that turns the worm gear on the end is still solid on the shaft. I'm suprised VDO didn't put a clip on the other end to prevent this from happening...

More info!
Took my car in to get the bushings checked out. Suprisingly the rear ones were deemed fine, but the tranny mounts were bad plus a torn cv boot. I am getting a clunking from the rear when I let the clutch out, which prompted the bushing check, but he said that's normal for the quattro's after a while. Still annoying though. Now if I can just reeeeeeach in there and replace those center diff hoses.
