Headlight wiring looks like it's melting
Hi all,
Had a headlight (DS) go dim on my 86-4KQ and when I opened up the area around the bulb to check the plug, I found that the ground (brown) clip in the socket is a dark brown and looks like it's melting.
I took the other side off and it looks similar, not quite as bad. The switch doesn't seem to get overly hot when using the lights, so I don't know what would cause it to happen at the plug/bulb connection.
Any ideas??

Ah hah!
The exact thing happened to me a couple months ago Jon. I am running those fako xenon bulbs, they look cool! Only one connector melted on my car, the drivers side. Since my lighting wiring is a bit odd (some 85's have a "pigtail"), i had to cut and solder wiring back together from a donor car. There is a post a couple pages back, with a picture about it. HTH

The headlight switch will also melt as well. The plastic around one of the pins was completely melted, and was skewed off at a funky angle, not allowing my lights to work right. I think this is one area european auto manufacturers should have just let the Japanese contract parts for. My friend used to have an old Volvo, and I swear...every electrical thing on that car was toast.

Re: Add a relay
I understand the relay to protect the switch at the dash, but this is the plug at the BULB. I don't see how a relay will protect the ground clip. Is the ground on this somehow poorly run??
I will put in a seperate ground and see if it improves the situation.
