x-post: question about climate control system
Sometimes, not all the time, when I run the climate control system a sweet smell comes through the vents. But if I switch it to recirculate, it goes away. Switch it back to fresh air and it comes back. What the hell is that? Washing windshield is not the cause.

Smell like warm/burned maple syrup? It there after you shoot the wiper fluid?
Otherwise as Ronuk said could be coolant coming in from a leaky heat exchanger. In my opinion anti-freeze smells kinda like maple syrup. The exchanger on my '02 1.8T had a nasty leak, anti-freeze vapor was blowing from the vents and all over the floor.
So first check the floor in the on either side of center console for any moisture or fluid coming down from the floor vents. Also check the carpet for any liquids. If everything check, do the following:
1. Let car warm up with Climate controls off
2. Turn system on Auto and set all the way to Low - this will get it to bypass the heat exchanger completly.
3. Check for the smell
4. If the smell doesn't come about, bump it all the way to high - now all the air should be coming through the heater where the leak would be.
5. Check for smell again - if its there odds are you have a coolant leak in the heat exchanger/heater core
