Half way through the cv boot job - need advice!

I cut off the old boot, removed the triple square axles bolts and the axle is now free but there is not enough room to pull it down or to the side to remove the actual axle from the joint so I can slide the new boot on.

Do I have to remove the nut holding the axle on the outside and if so what kind of socket is this??

Or can I unbolt the whole arm assembly from the strut and drop it down (bolt in green)? Would that give me enough space to remove the axle joint (in blue)?

The nut turns out to be 30mm 12 point, anyone has a socket this size I can borrow?

Thanks nunya, but I'm working on the Beetle, not A4

You could get ghetto and hammer it off with a chisle.

I know I have the socket you need, but IIRC it was 32MM?

I have a complete set of axle nut sockets. But, they;re all 6 point, sorry.

Autozone and Advanced Auto have free loaner axle nut sets. However, the ones that I have seen are all 6 point. May be worth a trip if its close to confirm what they have.
