Default Consumer Reports article... (I don't think this is a repost)

Link below, but the key interesting quote is this:

By contrast, the problem rate for European automakers rose slightly to 21 per 100 from 20 last year.

"Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Volvo had more than their fair share of problems. Only Audi came out better than average," the magazine said.

Consumer Reports Article

Default One thing to consider is that German manufacturers' cars tend to hold their value better than..

others. I'm willing to put up with a little less 'quality' in return for better resale value. Economics of it make up for the couple of extra trips to the dealer, which are covered under warranty anyway.

Default I wouldn't say you're putting up with less quality. IMO quality and reliability are 2 different...

beasts. Compare the "quality" of our car's components, escpecially interior components, to other brands and I'd say that Audi quality is top notch. Reliability on the other hand...I always expect a couple of glitches from German cars. Although, neither my S4 or my Touareg have had any problems.

Just my 2 cents.

Default I see your point. With the Audi's I've owned, reliability hasn't been an issue.

I've never had one strand me anywhere. To me reliability is that the car gets you from point a to b everytime. The first S4s to hit US shores had all kinds of problems, that's about quality imho.

Default I just found it interesting that Audi came out better than all other Euro manufacturers...

I hear all to often about poor Audi reliability from folks (who own BMWs, Merc, etc), and the CR data says otherwise.

Yeah. It seems like it wasn't so long ago that Audis had more black circles than reds.

Default Doesn't some of that number come from owner expectations too??

I think a big part of that statistic is that European car customers EXPECT a better car based on the price they pay. At least in comparison to someone that buys a Hyundai. So an Audi customer will be more critical of something like a rattle in the dash where a Hyundai customer will just live with it as the result of buying a cheaper car. Remember, these "problems" are the same type of things that JD Powers reports on. Be it a broken cupholder or a long running CEL issue like EdLove's.

Default I've have alot of confidence in a publication that tests cars & toasters in the same issue...

I have laways wondered how they can take themselves seriously, or how anyone can take what they have to say seroiusly. Have a tooth ache? go to a Dentist, have to build a house? go to a contractor, have a court date? take a lawyer along. They are a Jack of all trades and master of none.
I am impressed how Toyota's always max out as the best in all of their comparos. Now the statements about Japaneese cars being truely the "King of the Road"...OMG
