knocking sound in 93 S4

I have this ticking that only sounds when under load. At first I thought it was a lifter (sounds like one) but then I realized that I can't just rev the engine to produce it... have to be accelerating/driving at 3500+rmp. What ticks: trans mount, turbo bypass,... ?
