Newbie A4 B5 2000 model 1.8TQ owner needing upgrade advice
I purchased the car 2nd hand in mid 2004 and I am looking for the newbies guide upgrading it. It has a new STOCK clutch and flywheel since I noticed after I had bought it that it wasn't biting well. I realise now that I should probably have taken that opportunity to replace the clutch with an aftermarket version. Oh well.
Say I have $10000 AUD for parts & installation to spend and I live in Sydney. I want to get the most bang for my buck. Ideally what I am looking for is more power but also to maintain the day to day smoothness and commuter driveability. I also want to maintain the stock look of the car as much as possible. What should I get - new turbo, intercooler, clutch, chip, exhaust system? Where should I get it? Who will install it in Sydney?
If I got a better turbo system for example what else would have to be upgraded to cope with it? Will the stock clutch hold up? Note that I won't be doing hard launches or driving it like a madman but I want the power to be occassionally available when I need it. Is $10000 enough or will I need to spend a whole lot more?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Chip - Approx $1500 for a GIAC
Bypass Valve - GFB for approx. $300
Clutch - Approx $2-$4K depending on brand and stage and what your requirements are (includes a Light Weight Flywheel). The better the clutch the more the $. I run a Werks of Art Stage 3 at around $3K. I smoked my stock clutch with a decent GIAC chip - so my advise is definately upgrade the clutch.
Front Mount Intercooler / Exhaust - Approx $1.7K for a good FMIC and anywhere from $1K+ for an exhaust. (Go custom - off the shelf is a rip off and custom always fits better).
Suspension - Anywhere from $2K plus for a decent set of springs and shocks or $3K plus for a coil over set-up or around $5K+ for a decent custom valved set-up.
Other things for consideration
Short Shifter - Approx $600
Rear Sway Bar - Approx $500
Brakes - How much you wanna spend? Around $3-4K for a decent 333mm X 33mm 4 pot set-up on the front.
Note: you will need to change the front bumper to an S4 bumper to fit any sort of decent front mount intercooler in there - around $2K fitted for the bumper with painting.
If you want to upgrade the turbo the cheapest solution is a KO4 straight bolt on replacement. Around $2.5K for the turbo, plus labour, plus software upgrade, plus colder plugs, plus either injectors (approx. $700-$1K) or a 5 bar Fuel pressure Reg. This will yield around 250 horses at the fly.
Anything more than this is full custom using a GT or equivalent turbo - budget around 10K for an upgrade like this.
Yes - its tuned for Aussie Pump fuel.
It is one of the few chips that has been specifically tuned of Australian premium fuel.
