Have you tried cleaning the laser lense? You can buy CD player lense cleaners (a disc with a small brush on it) or open the unit and clean with a mild alcohol solution.
Apparently there are lots of problems with these stackers as, when mounted horizontally, the lenses face upwards and collect dust and other contaminants.
