Winter driving with all season 235/45-17

Hi,

My car came with all season 235/45-17 tires. I have a 2.0T quatro. On my previous car, a VW Passat with Quatro, had all season tires was fine in the snow, however, they were 195/65-15. Much more narrow.

I live in Massachusetts. Do you think this size tire will be OK in the winter? Anyone have experience?

Don't worry, There will not be any snow - road will clear before our cars in most mystical ways.

I ran the same size tire in my B6 and had no problems with them... mountain chain control folks would let me through while stopping SUVs, etc. (Sierras)

It really depends on your local driving conditions...

...short trips on level roads at lower speeds? Does the snow pile up where you drive? I've managed with all seasons with no trouble at all but my work drive is 8 miles one way with no hills and low speeds. It is extremely rare for me to see anyone getting stuck around here... even Billy Bob in his F150 with bald tires.

OTOH, if you do hit higher speeds, have extended snow, hills, whatever, you really do need an extra set of wheels so you can corner & stop better.

nothing beats snow tires - go to the the tre rack testing or get the latest Road and Track

and read the reviews by Pirelli.

I have two sets of wheels - one for summer and one for winter and I live in a area that has less harsh winters than you.

In northern NH, I wouldn't drive without snows

I use Blizzak LM-22s for winter driving, and they've done a fine job. Traction is decent with the all-seasons, but stopping and steering can get a little dicey on some of these mountain roads and hills. Do some testing when you have your first snow...if you're comfortable stopping with the all-seasons that's all you need.
