Default Proud Owner of New A5 S-Line!

Greetings! I just traded my '08 M35 Sport for an '09 A5 S-Line on Saturday, Ibis White/Black Alcantara, Premium/Nav/B&O. I love this car!

I have been lurking in this forum for almost 2 years and test drove the first S5 that showed up at the dealership. I have admired this car since the day it was introduced, but the timing has never worked out until now. The Audi salesman has stayed in touch with me since the first day we made contact.

I received the Employee Discount e-mail and wasn't expecting much since I figured it was a marketing ploy. As I thought, I only received $750 customer loyalty discount off MSRP because (as they put it) the car is "scarce". In this case, there were other customers wanting to test drive it while we were closing the deal. I'm sure I could have haggled more, but I felt I got a lot of car for the money no matter what.

FYI, my last Audi was an '02 A6 4.2. Great car, but I traded it after 8 months because the service in So. Florida was so awful and the dealership was so far away. I now live in TX, where service in general seems to be better and live close to the dealership in case I need to take it in. Since leaving Audi, I have had a variety of Acuras, Lexuses and Infinitis. I've been satisfied with all but had forgotten how solid and substantial an Audi feels.

BTW, we still have an '08 Infiniti G37 Coupe in our garge as well, so it is really interesting to compare. They are both beautiful cars, but in completely different ways. The G has a bit more "wow" in the interior design, but only when you first look. The A5 looks a bit more conservative, but the longer you are in the car the more you appreciate the details. The materials are head and shoulders above the G. The G feels more lively and tossable, but the A5 feels more solid. The G has no trunk space and very little storage room. The A5 has tons. The G city/highway mileage is approx. 18. I'm expecting 22-24 with the A5.

IMO, Audi has done everything right with this car. I'm glad I waited all this time because it makes it that much more special to finally have one!

Congrats on a great purchase. Post pics when you can.

BTW, you'll do much better than 22-24mpg on the highway. I am typically in the low 30s in highway driving.

Yeh, those mileage numbers you are expecting are more like what I get on my S5 tip. All depends on how fast you like to drive, but if you do around the speed limit or a bit more in an S5 tip, you get about 23.5 on the highway. (We wont talk about around town in S mode. Hehe.) My parents have the A5 and I can easily do over 30 mpg on the highway with that.

love the S-Line

Great choice. I echo other comments about expecting higher mpg than in your OP.

I had an A4 S-Line Avant with the same engine as you (3.2), and my 4000 lb wagon got about 20-21 city and 26-28 highway with the 6MT tranny and fairly spirited driving. Without looking I'd guess that your engine is slightly more efficient (FSi valve lift, IIRC) and your car somewhat lighter than my wagon.

Once I clear out my stable (read, when the Vette goes away) I'll seriously consider an S5 with the supercharged engine.....

Thanks for the replies, guys! I will post pics when I have a chance. Have to keep working to pay for the car!

Glad to hear the mileage is so great. Although it was a great car, I was thrilled if I could squeeze 20 mpg out of my M35 with its 5-speed tranny. I do a lot of city driving, and it typically stayed around 17 mpg. Go figure... the A5 is faster yet gets much better mileage. Talk about the best of both worlds.

BTW, I am in Dallas.

One quick point of clarification - unless the A4 is a B8, the engine in the A5 3.2 is different (with direct injection plus valvelift) and should actually yield somewhat better fuel economy.

Sounds like you spec'd out my wife's car! Great choice! Now head over to NTAG and do some drives!

Eric.
