Default Quick Q, has been bugging me

So i'm pretty new to the Audi scene, bought my c5 A6 about a year ago, only recently have been reading up on the forum, i have an 01 a6 4.2, has a "nipple" with "gps/nav" on the trunk lid, the buttons/controls in the center console, but no actual navigation, just the symphony. What gives? I don't mind not having a nav but the nipple on the trunk lid takes away from the lines of the car. If it matters (which i doubt it does) it has the cold weather package and i believe sport package as well.

It probably does have Navigation, just not with a big screen on the dash like modern units. Our cars' Nav system uses the display in the center of the instrument cluster to display directions, along with voice commands. You can check behind the panel on the left side of the trunk to see if the actual Nav unit is there. Also check to see if the map CD is in the unit. You may not have been given one.

I have the nav from my 02 if your car is wired for it. I really do not know much about the installation. but I removed the unit when I upgraded to RNSE

As Shaun has pointed out, you have the OEM nav setup which is CD-based. However, if you wanted to upgrade to the DVD-based RNS-E, which replaces the Symphony headunit with a LCD screen, MP3 player (SD cards), etc., it is an expensive, but very nice upgrade. I've done it in my car, and I love it!

Just keep in mind, however, that your 2001 wiring is not fully CAN-enabled, and requires an extra adaptor to convert the signals properly between your instrument cluster and the nav unit. Without that adaptor, your travel and arrival times, as well as your clock, will be off.

There is a unit in the classifieds that will work, although you still need the "bjarne" cangate adaptor for your 2001, which are getting hard to find since he stopped making them in mass quantities.

Here is a link to the nav unit in the classifieds (not a bad price IMHO): http://classifieds.audiworld.com/sho...uct/230/cat/21

Just get a NAVIGON, I was thinking of RNS-E, but it's outdated and I don't like the time consuming 3 minute scroll through address ranges.
