Strange sound when shifting
In recent weeks I've noticed an odd thumping sound when shifting on my '00 180 TTQ. When I step on the clutch past the middle point, and I release it, as the gear engages I hear a thump that appears to happen on the rear axle. It is as if there were some play between two pieces that engage rather abruptly. It happens when taking off and when shifting to all gears but 5th.
Another way I can hear the thump is if I drive at a speed that is slow enough for me to stay on second gear; if I step off the gas and step on it again, the thump is very clear. The clutch is not engaged at all in this scenario.
If I step on the clutch only half way the thump is either greatly reduced, depending on the gear, or it doesn't occur at all; thus, if I pay attention to how far I step on the clutch the shifting can be noiseless. Also, if I accelerate quickly, the noise doesn't seem to happen even if step on the clutch past the middle point.
Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas of what may be happening? My TT only has about 60K of well-maintained and gently-driven miles.

You have either backlash issues somewhere or you need u joints. As differentials age this is very common on all cars to have a thump with sudden changes torque demand. Have a mechanic drive the car. He will be able to tell you really fast what is going on. As far as repairs people typically never reset backlash. Any typically diff's don't fail. But if it gets bad enough it will. Other possibilities are worn out mounts.
