Default 1-2 Shift collar issue?

'04 2.7t w/96K miles. I started having an issue at about 85K miles in which the trans would sometimes not engage 1st at a full stop. If I put slight pressure on the stick toward 1st and let off the clutch slightly, it would pop right in with no drama.

Some time after this, the trans was difficult to get into 2nd on a downshift from 3rd. Each issue is very sporadic, and doesn't happen most of the time.

At around 90K, the syncro for 3rd blew. The dealer replaced 1-4 syncros under my CPO warranty. Dealer said they'd only charge another hour for labor to install a new flywheel/clutch/pressure plate (which I supplied - stock replacement for germanautoparts).

3rd engages fine now - but the sporadic issue with 1st and 2nd still exist (though it seems to occur less often).

I brought the car back to the dealer, thinking my shifter needed adjustment. They had the technician who replaced my syncros take a drive with me (with him driving). He couldn't reproduce the issue in 2nd - but got 1st to not engage twice. He said it was normal, and that the syncro had to break in. I don't buy it, but maybe I'm wrong.

Does this sound like a shift linkage issue? I watched the video on JHMotosports about the 1-2 shift collar, and I wonder if the problem they explain is what I'm experiencing.

Any input is appreciated.

If you are stopped, and can't engage 1st, can you put it into 2nd, and then into 1st?

Default I've been using the "let of a liitle on the clutch" trick for

so long that I don't remember! I'll try next time it happens.

I've been living with this problem for the last 20k miles or so.... I chalk it up to transmission fluid since after my car is warmed up it shifts like butter again, but when cold (especially this past winter) it is near impossible to get into first some days. Originally had Redline MT-90 fluid in there. I changed it out this past feb. with some mobil 1 synthetic and the shifting got a bit smoother, but it was still notchy getting into first when cold. My next step is to change the fluid with some syncromesh and see if that cures it. A few guys at work have had some good luck with the syncromesh.
