Default Any others with rough shifting 1st to 2nd when cold?

Seems to be too rough. No other gears, just 1st to 2nd. Gets to be ok after warm. Anyone else feel this with their A4? 99.5QM1.8t

Yes, on my 99 A4 1.8T QM. Letting in warm up for a few minutes helps, as does shifting up at approx 2500-3000rpm.

Yes, Was told by the dealer that it's normal until it gets warmed up. Mine won't go into 1st when cold until you come to a complete stop. Guess I'll live with it...

Problem for many vehicles. I shift from 1st to 3rd on slight downhill

Default Actually, since the synchro-mesh isn't operating when at a complete stop, it's recommended... (more)

...that you gently shift into 1st gear before coming to a complete stop. Don't try to force it though, just apply light pressure and it'll slide right in before stopping. This will put less wear on the transmission than shifting after stopping and risking not having the spline teeth matched up.
