99 A6 Avant Engine Swap
At 163k the 2.8l 30v in my 99 Avant has given up the ghost. My indy suggests replacing it with a 3.0 out of a 2003 A6 Avant. What do you guys think? Everything else is working fine so I'm hesitant to start looking for a new car and a payment.

cam seals blew and when the oil got low enough before i could get pulled over, developed a blow out by the dipstick funnel according to my indy. he tells me that he could rebuild the bugger but that it would cost the same as dropping in another motor with only 23k on it using a 3.0l out of a 2003 avant.

Must have been high crankcase pressure to blow that much oil out the cam seals. Usually they leak very slowly.
The 2.8 is a proven reliable engine. The 3.0 is not as rebust (IMHO) nor is it anything that even resembles a direct fit into your car. Find a used 2.8 out of a 98 or 99 A6 and install it. It should not be too hard to find one; most of them last forever.
Make sure you do a complete timing belt service on anything you install, including the cam seals, crank seal, cam adjuster seal, water pump, yada, yada (STFA)
...and check your oil more often ;-)

It just so happens I have a 2.8 for sale, going with the more expensive/boost additive 2.7T motor LOL.
call or email we can discuss things, mind you motor has 89k miles but it is in very good condition only needing the TB and seals replaced before shoving her back in
