Default A6 2.8 yellow goop while changing the oil

Hi guys,

I live in MN. I am telling this because the problem I am going to discuss might have some relationship with cold weather or may be not.

Any way, today i went to get my car's oil change and tech showed me the some yellow goop in the engine oil and asked me to get the flush the engine as this is some oil residue. By the way, I already noticed that yellow goop or yogurt thingy months ago but didn't know what to do.

Also, car was consuming oil and burning it. smoke was many times in my car. two q in three months may be.

So I let the tech flush the engine, what he did was by simply putting some fluid in the engine and drained out after 10 min of idle engine.

Now, I want to know the reason of yellow goop. I did some google and came up with a statement from one guy. I need help on that, what he is trying to say. Please help me on this.

" There is one other possible cause for this yellow goop : a blocked scavenger hose. Most engines have a hose which comes off the cam cover and returns to the engine block somewhere via a vacuum line. This is the scavenger hose which scavenges oil vapour and gasses that build up in the cam cover. If it's blocked you can end up with a buildup of condensation inside the cam cover, which can manifest itself as the yellow goop inside the filler cap."

I'd probably start with a leak down test to make sure you don't have a head gasket problem.

Is the car used primarily for long trips? When was the last time the suction pump was changed?

Head gasket is not leaking. I am sure. I monitor is for many months. Oil does burn though. but just for a while.

No, I drive it only in the city. I warm up the car before I drive it though

Yeah suction pump could be the culprit. I guess it has never been changed. How do I change it?

Please take a look at threaded view to post in the correct place. This looks like a response to yourself.

The short drives are not good for the car. You should replace the suction pump (tech articles) and as much of the breather system as possible. Also, your is not buring oil, it's leaking oil. Find and fix the leaks.

Ultimately, that "yellow goop" DOES indicate condensation in some part of your lubricated spaces, and what's condensing is WATER. Do your checks and find out what's allowing water to collect and you'll have your solution.

I did have similar "goop" under my oil cap once...had never really looked for it before and after thinking about it I assumed it was from lots of short trips in the winter. Cleaned it and the goop has never returned (75k miles since that happened).

The goop is definately condensation related, and there's a good chance that your breather system is full of the same stuff. The yellow goop is what you get when oil and water make an emmulsion (think vinaigrette). If it's in the engine, it could be caused by the Valve Cover Gasket, which would also explain you burning through oil (this is a part that frequently fails early especially in colder climates). Look on either side of the motor for oil residue or remove a spark plug and look for oil on the plug or wire.

Being an MN driver myself, my guess is that it is caused by short trips in the winter months. If the engine doesn't warm up completely, it can't burn off excess moiture, which then condensates as it cools and mixes with the oil the next time you start the engine.

If you're in the MPLS area, take it over to Imola Motorsports in Golden Valley, they'll take good care of you.

If you were to have asked before the great forum migration of 2009 (last month), I could have found the exact post that is relevant to your problem. It USED TO BE POSTED in the v8 engine forum but apparently years of content has been lost since I see that there is only one post there now. Someone in the D2 (A8) forum had posted about this some time ago and had a detailed writeup on the cause & his solution.

IIRC, the problem stems from short trips in very cold weather where a PCV-system-related diaphragm becomes stuck/frozen resulting in the yogurt mess you are in now. Since just about all the D2 members have abandoned, you may ask around at the other D2 forum which is verboten to mention here. At the risk of my exile, find them at q u a t t r o w o r l d [D O T] c o m

I have both of valve gaskets blown and I saw oil in the breather hose. dang it.
suction pump was working as i tested it. I guess, I should replace the breather hose tubes as well along with the gaskets.

What do you guys suggest?
