Default Cam Adjuster Seal Help

I'm replacing my valve cover gasket and cam adjuster seal on the passenger side of my 03 2.7t 6MT, and have a bit of an issue in disassembly. I’m following the procedure in the link below, but am not seeing how to disassemble the round part on the left center of the attached picture. It is directly over the lower bolt for the cam adjuster. What is it and how do I remove it? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

Looks like a combi valve. You can't just unbolt it?

I suggest you change the cam adjuster seal on the other side too.

Default Replaced the cam adjuster seal and vc gasket, now the car sounds like a diesel

It was a combi valve. I wasn't sure on how to remove it, but got it figured out. Problem now is after doing this work and replacing the 3 spark plugs on that side, the car sounds like crap. I marked and checked the cam chain during the work, it did not move.

If you compress the tensionser too much it can be damaged.

When does it sound like crap - one time at start after the initial seal replacement or constantly while running? If it is just a ONE-time thing at start the oil pressure needs to be built up. Trust me I scared the ****e out of myself when doing a cam tensioner seal job. After the initial one to two seconds of popping the first time after starting the car after I did this work, it never returned. However if you are experiencing it as a constant that is definitely not good.

Default It's pretty consistent above idle, but quite at idle. Sounds like an exhaust leak

but I didn't have one before doing the work.

This may help you: Did you remove the combi-valve only, or did you remove the metal pipe that attaches to the rear of the head? (I'm referring to the metal pipe the combi-valve is attached to). If you removed the metal pipe, did you notice a small gasket that goes between the pipe and the head? If you missed that gasket, you'll get the exhaust-leak sound. BTDT.

Default I removed the pipe, if I understand you right.

You are talking about the pipe with two allen key bolts on the bottom and one on the top by the combi valve, correct? It's a PITA to get to. Do you have any info on the gasket (name, part number)?

Thanks!

The sound that you are describing happened to me too. Did you completely removed the arm that is attached to the head? (the one Grapeking is describing) If you did, look around on the floor because there is a small gasket that goes between that arm and the head.

I didnt unbolt mine completely, I just loosened those bolts a little bit and the gasket was just hanging on one of the bolts. Maybe the same is happening to you?

You can call Carson @ Riversideaudi and try to see if he can help you out finding the part number. He is a great guy.

Good luck!

That's the one. I'll see if I can find that gasket number for you. And you are right - it is a PITA to work back there. Also, one more thought -there is a small metal tube back there that is held on by a metal 'clip' that folds over the tube and is then bolted in place with a bolt back there - on my first try at reassembling everything back there I accidentally pinched that metal 'clip' between the head and the combi-valve mounting tube - this REALLY sounded like an exhaust leak. After looking back there with a small mirror, I realized what I had done and fixed the problem. That quieted things down a lot, but there was clearly still an exhaust leak sound so that's when I realized the gasket was missing. Hope you can follow what I am saying here.
