Default 00 A6 Avant-need help replacing liftgate lifters

I have to replace the gas-filled lifters for the the liftgate on my Avant.
I have the replacements, part # 4B9827552M. I would guess this is probably the same part used for the trunk lifters on the sedan version of the car.

I have no instructions, so I need to ask help with a couple questions

1) The lifters arrived in the box fully extended, and frozen. I can't push them closed. They are obviously locked into place. I have tried turning the shaft connections at various points, but nothing budges. I don't want to force anything and risk breaking it-so how does one unlock lifters so that they extend and contract?

2)It looks like, from the connection fittings on either end of the lifters, that they lock into place by pressure clasps. Is that all there is to it? You just pull out the old ones, and press the new ones into position? Or is there a lock release on the connection points that is not immediately obvious to me? Thanks

[Edit: Added photos] First, you're going to need something to support the hatch, it's MUCH heavier than it seems. I use a broom handle.

Then, use a small screwdriver to pry the metal clip on the ball joint open. There is a depression where the screwdriver wants to go. Then, you just simply remove the old one, and clip on the new one.

That it's extended is normal, and you shouldn't be able to press it in by hand. Again, that hatch is a lot heavier than it seems. =)

Where did you source them/how much did they cost? I'm going to probably have to do this later this yr. or during next winter on mine. They're weak in winter, OK now.

Thanks very much for the pics. I am very surprised to read that the cylinders are normally so stiff, that they cannot be compressed by hand. I felt sure that they had to be locked into position. I presume you still try to rotate at least one connection point ball point to the right orientation.

Default source for the lift cylinders

I ordered from from www.genuineaudiparts.com. They are out in San Diego I believe. Price was $36.02 each, plus about $7 for shipping.

I usually attach the end on the piston first, then rotate the body to line up..
