Slipping tranny

Aight.. Surfed the search for about an hour now and am giving up.
My cousin has an A6 with the 4.2 auto, 2000.
Out of the blue it started to slip, was searching for gears and now is in limp mode. It slips less in limp mode. It happened suddenly so I am thinking it was electronic that went bad. We have a Vagcom on the way but I wanted to do some research with "experienced folks" to know what to look for. Ya know like what wires to look for that may have come loose. Just did the timing belt about 2 months ago. Suggestions?

Check the fluid level.

vag com is your friend, check the fluid level also, if the trans fluid hasn't been changed, this is a common issue on the my 00

He changed the filter so the fluid is right. I know that since it has been in limp mode that it is working better. But you are saying completely change the fluid? Suggestions on the service?

I trust no one but myself. How do you know that the fluid level is correct?
