What is the best oil for a 2000 A6 4.2l...
Just picked up a 4.2l after my 97 2.8 finally died. What oil is everybody using in these engines? I used Castrol 10W-40 high mileage (dino) in my 2.8 for 110k (210k total) without issues. In fact I have used Castrol products for years in a long list of VWs, Audis and Opels.
Any thoughts on brand, weight and dino vs synthetic would be appreciated.

I use only synthetics. I started with Castro Syntec 5W50 or 10W40 depending on the time of year then switched to when Mobile 1 started reducing their prices, I switched to 0W40.
I noticed when running dino vs. synthetic in my Porsche, my fuel economy rose by about 10% (freeway driving average), and it has been my experience that synthetics will last longer without breaking down, so I have been changing my oil at 5000 miles with synthetics vs. 3000 for dino.
My mechanic tells me that my motor internals are one of the cleanest internals that they have worked on, so I'm sticking with synthetics.

I'm usually a Mobil 1 guy myself, use it in everything, at the weights recomended. However, I just picked up 2, 5L jugs of Castrol Syntec 5W40 for the 2.7T for $30 each at Wal-Mart. The Mobil 1 has been going up in my area (Canada) an is about $43 for a 5L jug.

Use a synthetic Audi/VW 502.00 approved oil, and you'll be fine. If you're looking for something you can pick up locally (Walmart, AutoZone, etc), M1 0W40 and Castrol Syntec 5W40 are about the only options. If you're willing to do mail order, there are a lot of other approved oils available in the US.
