19x8 et30 on 2.8 quattro avant
17" wheels are the "best" compromise between looks and functionality/practicality. It still gives you enough sidewall for protection from road hazards, give you a comfortable ride. 18" looks the best, but you sacrifice some ride quality, and the price of rubber jumps quite a bit from 17" tires. 19" will just be bone-jarring.
The other thing to consider is lowering the car if you hate the gapina, but then you are looking at some $$, plus some harsher ride quality.
Here are a couple of picutres to illustrate...
Stock A6 non-sport ride height with stock 16" wheels:

Same car and suspension with 18" wheels (and same outer diameter tires):

The gap between the tires and the fender opening are the same, but the 18" wheels, the car looks even more jacked up!!!
