DIY Spider Hose Upgrade (for 2000 MY)
The stock spider hose is a piece of crap. It's not that it does its job poorly, just that it gets super fragile after a few years and breaks easily.
You can replace the brittle plastic tubing with high-pressure hose (readily available at hardware stores, typically in the plumbing section). You'll need two sizes of hose (5/8 and 7/8 I think) Altogether, this mod takes about 2 hours, not including removing the intake mani to gain access to the f-hose connection.
What you basically need to do is salvage the central valve and all of the end connections. The stock plastic hose connects with a plastic seal which you need to peel off using a sharp blade. This will reveal normal hose barbs underneath. You can then simply install the replacement hose and fasten using hose clamps. The hardest part is getting the replacement hoses to the correct length so that the valve ends up in about the stock location.
Some pics:

This shows the central valve with all but the leftmost hoses (left side valve cover and fhose connections) attached. I did not replace the hose for the connection to the y-pipe as this was in good condition.

Here is a closer view of the central valve - you can see that the hose barb connections. After you peel off the plastic this is what it should look like.

This is what it looks like installed. The hose clamp on the bent in the topmost hose on the left is there to keep the hose from nicking on the bend and closing off.

Keep the connectors and peel the plastic off of the connections as well to get the hose barbs. I don't recommend trying to fit the hose over the openings in the valve cover. Reusing the plastic connections is much easier.
