oops. Airbag light on, no airbag codes. Could it be my bad cluster?

oops. Airbag light on, no airbag codes. Could it be my bad cluster?
My airbag light came on a few weeks back, and I need help fixing the situation.
Scanned multiple times, and the only code I get is an intermittent O2 sensor code.
When I go to scan the airbags, a warning pops up on VAGCOM that says certain airbag control models can be ruined just by scanning them. Since my car falls into the years that this could happen, I haven't scanned them.
I heard plugs can go bad, but when I poked my head under my seats, there are what looks like a half dozen plugs. No idea which one I should look at. The lack of any codes makes me think this is not where I should be looking.
When it comes to engine/mechanical stuff, I'm completely competent. When it comes to electrons, I'm not.
Additionally, my cluster is going. LED on gas needle is out. LED display is now completely out. AND, I've recently done quite a bit of stereo work, and I just learned the airbag controller is under the stereo area, so might I have messed something up down there?
