Default 75k 2001 TT, low oil pressure, dealer says "New Motor!"

To start the ordeal I had the oil pump replaced by an independent which worked for about a month. Then the low pressure light came back. I have never heard the engine sound rough and always pulled over nearly immediately. This time I took it to the dealer. They inspected the top end of the engine and everything looks good (no bearing wear, etc.) other than some carbon build-up which they cleaned. They are now scratching their heads and in absence of any other ideas they're telling me it probably needs a new motor. They're taking one more day of analysis though.

Any advice? The car *was* worth ~$10K (when it was working). New motor maybe $7K+? I've already sunk about $3k for the initial work on this problem. Essentially the repairs will put me past the value of the car.

I love(d) this car but geez, my patience is being sorely tested. I dunno - I see used engines on ebay but going down that road sounds just painful.

Very sad TT owner here...

A number of things can cause the low oil pressure, but the normal culprits are a faulty oil pump or bad bearings. A head gasket issue can also do it. Usually, it's best to have it assessed by a pro.

Now for the good news. the last time I had an oil pressure issue, it was the sending unit. My pressures were actually fine.

Did they verify that the sending unit was good?

It was verified that the pressure was low. Bearings are fine. Oil pump was replaced. Like I said, they are pretty much clueless.
