pinging noise from engine
the best way I can descibr it is to fill a glass jar full of marbles and shake it a bit.
I dont know if its the motor pinging or if its maybe a noise from one of the accessories?
I run 91 octain from shell with no ethinol.
I tried to record the noise but all I got was wind noise.
anyone have any ideas?
on a side note I have been getting a shudder from the transmition as well as a chirp noise. would I need the software update or do I need to flush the trans?
Have your retrieved any fault codes with the VAG-COM? Are you getting a Check Engine Lamp at the dash? If it's pinging as bad as you indicate and it's the engine, you should have fault code(s). If no fault codes, then I would suspect a mechanical issue as you guessed. But that could be an awful lot of things.
What else can you throw out to help nail it down?
As for the trans chirp, I had this as well, only way to fix is to flash the ECU and get a flush; whether you go the all out way with the audi blue, or just a traditional flush.
By the way, ethanol has high octane number (100). It just has 23% less energy than gas.

I dont have any codes or a check engine light on.
The only way a belt would be loose is if the tentioner is gone right?
I have had the plugs changed and the coils done (which by the way made my car idle a bit rough) as well as a new belt.
I'm not really sure where to start looking, the noise sounds metallic a little, and it happening more often now.
Are there anything in the accessory system that's known for going?
I can't really think of anything that would make that kinda sound.
I will try and get a vid but it's hard as it cant be replicated unless the car is moving or under load, all i get is a bunch of wind noise.
