Power Trunk sticking: Solved
My new issue was that recently the trunk would stick and sound like it would try to pop but the motor just couldn't seem to raise it up without a little nudge or pull on the lid; always closes fine though.
Now my solution seems simple enough and even like it would be the logical first thing to do but here it is:
If your trunk is sticking a little bit, unlike the bent arm the other user experienced; mine would stick a little on which seemed more on the left side. I took a can of spray WD-40 and put a paper towel behind the joints and one at a time gave each joint/moving point of the trunk a good blast of the WD-40. I did this to both sides then manually opened and closed the trunk without it latching to work the grease in. Now my trunk acts and performs like brand new, no more sticking issues or problems at all. I also sprayed WD-40 onto the latch on the lower trim, as well as in the latch/lock itself. Hopefully it will close and latch in the winter now as well.
Cheers!
gave them a dose of dry teflon. Worked that in and followed with a bit of light machine oil. It worked for awhile, but not reliably. I used a little white
klithium grease and that helped a little but its still not reliable. Removing the tools from the tool bin helped a lot, but still not reliably. I'm waiting for new
struts which should be here this week. I'm hoping that helps. I did note that the buffers on the lid with the spring loaded pins don't land on the flat part of the
sill. The left one lands right on the radius so its not hitting flush. The right one lands a little higher than that. I did try some pads on the sill for the buffers to
land on but its still not reliable. Its either the struts or the motor at this point. There is enough lube in the pivot points to lube an aircraft carrier and the trunk
moves up and down very easily now. I'm hoping the struts give it enough lift when it unlatches for the motor to grab it and raise it. Doesn't take much.- as you
say, just a nudge. Seems to work better in the morning down here when its a bit cooler. In the heat of the Florida day (low 90s today) is when its gets lazy
but with a nudge if it opens all the way once it will be ok for awhile. Removing the tools helped the most so there is a message there i.e., clutch slipping?.
Let us know how long the trunk works reliably with the WD-40.
