Default 2007 S8 vs 2010 535ix

I'm struggling here. I always swap cars every 2 years. But I love my S8 and I'd keep it if the warranty wasn't expiring. I could get an extended warranty but even the best aren't always reliable and repairs are a hassle regardless of who is paying.

I can't afford a 2009 S8. But I can swap my S8 for a 2010 535ix - which is, naturally, a step down in every way, from engine to stereo (love my B&O). But, the bimmer is essentially hassle free for the next 2-3 years (assuming its not a lemon). And, the S4, while fun, is a bit too much boy-racer for me.

So, what do I do? I know you guys are S8-biased (as am I) but I'd still like to hear your thoughts/experiences.

Thanks

Step down? Man it is almost like you are considering Camry as a substitute. OK not that bad but ...

If I can't afford 2009 S8 (which I can't) I would rather stay with 2007 S8 with extended warranty plus some risk than fall in that half way BMW. Only similarity I see is that they both have four wheels.

Default Good move

I would be concerned with that car being 4-5 years old too.
even with extended warranty and taking it to the dealer still is not that smart to keep.
just the hassle of waiting for parts and having a dealer with technicians familiar with the car makes me nervous.
plus the fact that those cars lose value so bad in couple years it will woeth next to nothing.
cut your losses short and move on.
however when you ask to compare it with the 535, there's no comparison at all, just might as well get the s4.

I cannot really see that the 535ix is a reasonable alternative, as good as the BMW is, it is a big step down.
If, however, you are going to a smaller car anyway, and I would not be happy with the running costs alone of the S8, then you have to make that move at some point and while the S8 you have still has a reasonable value I would go for it now.
Maybe a newer A6 is a good option, the latest shape is not far off an '8' anyway and running costs will be lower as well as depreciation with it being a new model.

Have you sat in a 535? The materials are noticeably "cheaper" than the A8/S8. I'm in the same position right now but not considering the 535 because they're hard to find fully optioned.

What I am considering is either a fully loaded 550i or an M5. The M5 is going to give you all the performance (and more) of the S8 with more options than just about any of the regular 5 series cars plus a leather dash, alcantara headliner, heads up display, etc.

Just make sure you get one in warranty as the SMG transmission is not quite known for it's long term reliability. Drive one though... I absolutely love my A8 but would like something faster. The M5 was amazingly composed for what it is. You could easily daily drive it and then when you want it to move it just... well... moves.

That's like dumping a hot chick for an ordinary one, because you have to buy her something special every once in a while to keep her happy.

Not if you're rocking an M5 but otherwise, awesome analogy.

There are few things more useless than an M5 in the snow.

This thread makes me laugh. Regardless of warranty your trading an Audi for a BMW. You will be in the same situation you are in now, in a few years from now. Regardless if you say you get new cars every 2 years. Things change; etc. The S8 catches peoples eye and makes you feel badazz while the 5 series is just another **** in a suit
