Audi S8 Oil Change, Castrol 10w-60
I've read that some guys were using 10w-60 on a few FSI engine for a while and got very positive results, lower oil consumption by a lot and hardly any carbon in the intake runners and intake valves.
I just came across the 60W oil. I never knew it existed. I have the same questions as you do.
Are you asking the question in general?
If you don't know, Mishar is in no position to answer any questions.
the problem with any of the oil specs is that they more or less have a standard viscosity assumption. for example, SAE 5W30 has the same specs as VW503/504.
60W oil shouldn't be an issue if the engine is given enough time to warm up before driving, but is it really that important it meets the VW spec?

Oil spec for D3 era was 502/505 in general. W12 was 503 in the tech documentation, but in practice was serviced in at least USA as 502. 504 came later, and is more or less a successor to 503. 502 still quoted as a spec and a variety of oils on market meet that spec. The 504 oils are more common in Europe; in USA often marked as "ESP".
Bottom line, widespread advice is use an oil at or above the spec in the given manual and at those viscosities. If it says 502, then 502 or 504.
D3 S8 (or C6 S6) motor is not same as R8 or Lambo motor BTW--particularly in crank set up.
When I have used heavy viscosity oils out of spec, it is typically because I have an oil burning issue and repair is not practical due to age/expense/unrepairable problem, etc. But more important there can be the rated cold temp viscosity (the "10" in this case). D3 S8's in particular seem beset by more oil issues, commonly physical leaks that viscosity is not going to help.

I'm interested in exploring the performance differences between those viscosities. I do indeed have a leak at the moment, only slight, but that is not part of my rationale for moving to a different oil.
