Default 1994 90 CS - Two Different Keys

I recently purchased an 1994 90CS . Mechanically, everything is fine, but the car has two different keys for the door and ignition. The previous owner purchased the car from his uncle (the original owner) and stated that that is the way his uncle had always used the car.

In total, there are four keys; two for each set. One key is the keyless entry button for lock/unlock and the other is a regular key. One 'button key' will open all locks except the ignition, and the other button key will do the opposite - just the ignition and not the doors. The regular key for each set does what the other can not.

Is it possible that the keys are just worn out and need to be recut or did they come like this? Could it be that he replaced the ignition or the door locks at some point? Lastly, where can I purchase a new button fob for this car. I am new to audi's, but I come from the VW world. Thanks in advance.

You can make the igition key's button work on your car locks even if the key itself doesn't

My car came to me the same way, with two sets of keys. Just like yours I have a regular key that will work the ignition only and a "fob" style key that now only works the doors.

It is most likely that the ignition switch has been changed at some point. In the short time that I have been reading and searching, it seems as if the ignition switch is a common failure point in these cars.

The bottons on the fobs do work and it locks/unlocks the vehicle. The only issue is that there are two different keys that do dirrent things that one key is originally intended to do.

Is there a kit that I can buy to re-key the car? I would like to have just one key as its more convenient. Thanks again for the replies.

I had thought that as well. Since the previous owner did not know, I was sure that his uncle, at some point, replaced the ignition switch. Coming from the VW world, ignition switches are common to go, but why would you have to replace the ignition cylinder and not just the switch itself? I just really hate having two keys.
