Hydraulic Valve Lifters, Checking
That's the name of a procedure in Bentleys. 12V AAH, '95 Cab. It speaks to noisy valves and requires you to warm up the engine to first decide if it is the oil check valves, even specifying that the fans come on first. If not the check valves, it directs you to test the lifter clearance. Here's the question. Do the heads need to be warm when checking the lifter clearance or is it OK to check the clearance on a cold engine. I figure since I'm pulling the heads,I ought to do every reasonable test that I can prior to removing them.

Full operating temp is the most accurate, though least comfortable, time to measure. Full temp = ideal expansion/contraction status, and the most consistent temp that the valvetrain is going to experience.
A running engine is a controlled environment. A cold engine has too many variables. How cold is it? Is it still hot on the inside, but cooler to the touch on the outside? You just never know.
