Anyone do an MMI update??
MMI UPGRADE TO 3360 A SUCCESS!!!!!!Took about 20 MINS!!!
First Step make sure you have a full tank of gas.
2. take out all cd's from cd changer, then slide update disc 3360 into cd slot 1.
3.Make sure heated seats, ac control, lights inside car are off.
3. press return and setup button for 5 seconds.
4. scroll down to download software update all the way at bottom.
5.hit continue, make sure driver side window is down before you hit continue, i did this so i didnt mess with any electronics at all and i got out the car and hit download update through driver side window, i didnt touch anything not even open door while this was getting done.
6. let update run.
7. When Update is complete, scroll down and hit restart MMI!!!
8. AMI Automatically working after update!!!!YESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!AMAZING!!
For instructions, I recommend you search the forums for the Audi installation instructions (although they are approximately what Mikem listed). I prefer to not have the car running when performing an upgrade, so the official recommendation is to attach a battery charger to the car. You will likely experience severe consequences if the upgrade is interrupted (i.e. fry your MMI), so be prepared to spend the time with the car parked for the upgrade to complete.
BTW, which version is your MMI currently running, and to which version are you thinking of upgrading?
FWIW, I've found the 3360 upgrade to be very stable. People have commented that 4610 is also quite good, but I'm still trying to find some release notes that would tell me what functionality is added/changed to the car by the upgrade.

Nevertheless, I did it twice. Tried the latest European version (55**) and got back to 4610. No problem at all. It is not brain surgery. Bu the way, I never heard from any reliable source that any computer was fried during software upgrades but I can see dealers interest in scaring people. MMI can be updated from two different hidden menus. Regular one is described in the previous post. Second one is from CAR+SETUP menu, as I remember Bootloader. That one starts fresh installation of software. I used it to switch between European and North American versions.
Connecting charger is smart move. You never know how good your battery is and this can last a bit longer. It took 20 minutes when I did it, but it could be longer. Idling engine for that time is not the best way to go, unless one is related to the late Dr. Kevorkian.

You do not need to go step by step. 4610 can be installed directly. With it you get Cleanup disc that should be used first. I do not know details about those versions, but I know that some knowledgeable people spent a couple of years writing those lines. I choose to thrust them. I don't say that everybody should run to upgrade to the latest version but if you are already doing it go to 4610.
Buy original discs online. They are inexpensive and always better than copies.
Newer posts report you can do 4610 in one fell swoop via the clean up disks. If you use the search function, you can find the Audi instructions for the update.
I have updated myself to 4140 and then 4610. I got dealer to update mine to 3360 by using the old code phrase mentioned in a relevant TSB: "I lose my surround sound settings overnight." 4140 is where I saw some actual functionality change--altitude display, better track info in AMI, etc. The release notes for it (since vaporized on the board I think) said it cleaned up bluetooth compatibility issues too. They didn't make it clear, but it read kind of like code for iphone issues from other contemporaneous posts, particularly if you throw in for kicks Steve Jobs was reported to have been a W12 owner. I have seen no further change with 4610; could be the real purpose of 4610 was to simplify/streamline the update process and to eliminate the "summary capital punishment" aspect of missing 3360. 4610 install ran for a solid hour; longer than I really expected. 4140 took a while too, but not quite like that.
Disks are easily available by part number at the dealer, or via ECS Tuning or others on line. Search prior posts for the part numbers. As resported, in the $15-20 range.

Here is what I have found: there are now manyfolks out there who have purchased 2004-2005 used A8's in last 24 months. 2nd to 4th owners. Most of these cars have the 0600 versions still. I spoke to local dealer and then can update for $200. Cost of MMI update disks is about $30-$40 from a trusted course.
So, as I see it, a person would be paying the dealer about $150-$160 to SAVE the stress and time (about 1 to ??? hours) and let the dealer take all the risk of messing things up.
Also, most folks who update the MMI on 2004 and 2005's at this point likely have an old Navigation disk and will need a newer one. And, well, they might was well get as new a financially reasonable: so another $100 for a recent Navi disk (slightly higher if purchased from dealer).
Letting the dealer do this is only slightly more expensive then doing it yourself.
