Parking brake engaged when parked?

Makes perfect sense. The reason whey I asked is that the other day when I parked the car, locked it and stepped away from the door I heard pretty loud grunting noise coming from the rear of the car. It was either the suspension or the parking brake not sure.
Now the noise is gone.

If you do not use parking brakes A8 can activate it just to measure the thickness of the brake pads. I do not remember the numbers, but I think it will do that every 1,000 Km or 1,000 miles (I do not remember exactly) if you do not use the Parking Brake. If you use it periodically it knows the thickness and does not have to do it yourself.

I can't answer your question but all I can tell you is that EVERY time I get into the car in the morning or coming home from work you can very easily hear the rear parking brakes disengage as I open the door. Maybe the previous owner asked for this to be vag'd or whatever.
