Default Replace right front Air Strut

Well,

Looks like I'm going to have to fork over the money to buy a new right front air strut on my 04 A8L. I'd still like to save some cash with this repair. Is this a recommend dealer only install, or can it my DIY if you are handy with tools?

Thoughts?

I'm sure you can do it. I had a dealer do it because of time constraints and the bulk of the cost was for the part ($1500.00 or so) with labor "only" being $315 so the savings would not be that much. Now, if you can buy one outside of the Audi service parts network, you can save a bundle.

Handy guy can replace it himself (sorry ladies ). Problem is that they should be replaced in pairs, at least. Nobody would replace only one shock absorber if it not for the price.

Now Mishar, given parts wear and tear and what not. Would there be a point to replacing both at the same time or do you just recommend this to prevent the other one from having to be replaced soon as well. If the other is working won't it work just as well as a brand new one will? I just don't see the point of replacing a perfectly working strut, especially at $1500; after all these aren't like normal shocks and they should perform the same new or not. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry to say, but you are wrong. Shocks are very much normal shocks. They have one electrical valve that switches between comfort and dynamic setting and that's it. Rest of them is lake any good shock absorber. Older shock absorber produce less resistance than new. If they are on the same axle car will swing left-right after any disturbance. As I said - only price is problem.

I'm going to politely disagree. If the failure mode is pneumatic (air leak) theat failure mode is quite different from a hydraulic oil leak. Hydraulic oil leak would say replace in pairs, air leak only replace one at a time.

I did not read in the Bentley manual to replace inpairs as they do indicate in non-air suspension vehicles (my previous Audi's and VW's) nor did the dealer who replaced mine ever hint about replacing the other one nor did they write it on the work order/receipt.

Besides, at $1500 a pop, I'll do 'em as they fail.

Me too, but that's not how it should be done. Oil leak is not only problem with shock absorbers. Internal ware makes them less efficient. By the time you get air leak shock absorber is pretty much dead. As I said, it is all about price.

Would any of these parts be able to be used pm our A8s? I know they are oem struts for an allroad in addition to a redesigned upgraded version as well. Main question is will the compressor listed on the site work on our 8?
