Default Mangled coil pack boots, should I be surprised

My '06 A8 has only been serviced at an Audi dealership, yet I find the coil packs in such bad shape.

It looks like the tech just jammed them down into the heads. 4 out of 8 where like this.

I'm gonna say that was unavoidable.

Sure there is, put them in straight, press firm. If you don't line them up properly, the boot gets rolled up and you have to press twice as hard.

Admittedly, this is my first plug change, but it doesn't seem that hard to get these in straight—I would think a $100+ hour Audi tech could get it right.

Just a little shocked to see them in this kind of shape, that's all

if they are not push straight they will hit the tip of the plug and will not go in at all.
I would agree if you tell me to apply some silicone spray at the boot and then slide them in.
I see torn boots even at first plug change, this coming from the factory.
but hardly 4 out of 8 though.

Default boot

to me the boot in the picture shows the car had oil leaks in the past, oil softens the rubber on the boot causing deformation.

I am about to change the plugs on my 05 A8. Do you have any tips? Did you have any special tools? Curious, what plugs did you replace with?

OEM Bosch.

The hard ignition wire is a bit of a pain to work around, there is very little play. Other than that, just gently pull the coil packs out, and make sure you slip them back in straight. If you get it right, you'll hear an obvious "pop" as you make contact with the plug tips.

FYI, I changed my plugs yesterday, and two of my coils had rubber similar to the picture you show. This was the first spark plug change on this car (48K) and there has been no oil leak. I think the rubber must warp some over time, or it just gets pinched a little when placed in. A noted difference on my car (even in idle) with new plugs versus 6 year old plugs w 48k. Thanks for the advice, this was well saved money!
