2001 Quattro down to 12mpg

2001 Quattro down to 12mpg
i just got this car a month ago from a Honda dealership. it had 88k. but i just noticed the 12mpg? i drove it hard a few times. but i've only filled it once with a 91 octane. did i break it? is it the MAF?
OT:
i have stop driving it because i'm not sure when the belt was replaced. it had a loud knocking sound coming from the cam chain area when the engine got warm. it went away after i replaced the oil with 0W-40. i suspected that the Honda folks put the wrong type of oil. good thing i noticed their service reminder sticker on the window.
