Default 01 TT Quattro dies while driving

This started last week (twice) so I replaced the fuel filter. Seemed like a cheap, easy place to start. Died again this evening after about 15 mins of driving, but 45 mins into work this morning was fine. When it happens it will start back up after about 30-40 minutes. At cruising speed ,60-70mph, no problem, get back down to third gear and it will kill. I did notice that the temp seemed to be climbing a bit faster than it used to. No CEL. Have done some reading and came up with the obvious (fuel pump) and CTS or CPS. Any thoughts? When it rains it pours....as I'm dealing with excessive rear tire wear in another thread! Love my TT, just new to her and need some advice to keep her happy.

did you hook up your laptop and run VAG COM? If so did it report any trouble codes with any of the sub systems in the car?

Sounds like the fuel pump is taking a dump IMO.

Friend of mine has a reader (like the one most parts places have) and it didn't throw any codes on it. Not sure if that eliminates the sensors or not. Have read that the CPS sensor does not always have a code associated with it, but I could be wrong.

When the car dies and won't start, see if when you crank it, you see the RPM need in the cluster move. Usually they show the cranking RPMs but this may not be the case on all VAG cars. If it does rise from zero and show cranking RPM, but won't start, the crank position sensor is working. You can also verify RPM via VAGCOM and MVB 1, which shows the engine RPM also in the ECM.

So.....replaced fuel pump, still stalling. Replaced coolant temp sensor, still stalling. Remembered this post about the tach and noticed after it stalled and I tried to restart it does not show the crank RPMs. Here's what happened today after I replaced the CTS....Tested it in the drive keeping RPMs around 2500 or so for about 8-9 mins. Watched temp closely and noticed it climb pretty normal then seemed to rise a little more quickly. Dropped down again slightly then back up to about center. After about 30 secs of being on center I could feel a slight miss in the engine, but it kept running. As soon as I let off the gas it stalled. CPS or is it some other possible issue?
