Aux Pump Replacement
Doing aux pump replacement with the help of BaysideRS4's post (https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho...ight=baysideS4) and Truewit's A6 Tech Article (https://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng.html can't link directly to it...).
I'm just getting started. Got the Y-pipe off and mapping out my game plan.
I feel good about starting the disconnections with one exception. See pic below...what is the unit circled in red? Maybe I'm missing it, but I haven't found reference to this in either of my resources. And it seems to be a big part of the job because it's firmly attached to the intake manifold (see bolts circles in yellow). Second pic provided for context.
Can someone tell me if this is a drastic difference in my engine compared to Truewit's in particular? Will this section pose as big a problem in moving the manifold as I think it might?
Thanks in advance.
You MIGHT be able to cable tie it back far enough to clear the intake manifold...taking it out will involve releasing this oem clamps and replacing them with worm clamps and working with those corrugated hoses that may or may not break...they're old and plastic...do you feel lucky?
And no unfortunately I don't feel lucky, but I'm gonna have to move it anyway!
Still trying to figure out what it is...and what is different about my engine from the ones in all the other aux coolant pump threads? I've sifted through a ton of them, and haven't seen any pics that have this same unit...what's the deal?
Thanks again for you patience and assistance.
I had a hard time finding it as part of any system; it finally showed up with a search. It may be part of intake manifold removal or emission system(s). The pic I saw wasn't exactly like your bit so I extrapolated and suggested your component may be an SAI pump (not familiar with the V6 engine, FWIW, the SAI pump on my V8 is under the engine behind the alternator which is at 7 o'clock to boot!)
There are a couple more screws on the right side of the pump that hold it to a bracket, I believe they're 5 mm hex cap screws...
Once you have all the screws out, you can just lift it straight up and out. You don't really need to remove the hose (except from the combi valves) but it will make it much easier to see things the first time. When you put it back on, make sure you get it over the lip on the pump.
Edit: and yes, the SAI system injects air into the car upon cold starts in order to reduce emissions. It will be necessary in order for your car to pass inspections (if you care about that), but is not necessary for your car to run. It's a "green" item and some remove it entirely, but I have never seen the need.
