Default DIY 94 cabriolet auto trans rebuild

Hi,
94 audi cabriolet: is this possible by a reasonably resourceful do it your selfer? Any tips hints on first getting it out. Do you take out the starter to get to the flex plate/torque converter bolts. Also any tips or sites that go through the rebuild process. I've done just about every form of rebuilding other than an auto trans. I'm not too old to learn!
thanks, for any help, tips and advice, hushpuppy

I'm about to do a manual swap on mine because the trans is dead.

The flex plate is indeed accessible by removing the starter.

What's your transmission doing?

the car has been running fine until a long trip. when I came to a stop, there was some trans noise and light clunking and then would not move forward. strong reverse, but nothing forward. Its happened twice on the car. the first time I changed the fluid and filters twice and then it worked all summer long for about 5K miles. then crapped out a week ago. It smells a little burned and the first time there was a lot of copper metal shards in the pan.
thanks for your input. good luck on the std trans swap.

Thanks,

here is a view of the Trans with the engine removed...

the starter goes in the little indention about 8 o'clock on the flex plate. with the starter out you can rotate the crankshaft and remove each nut.

My cab is a 94. I intend to do a transmission swap with a 5 speed first (which ill definitely do a write up for) and then eventually finding a 1.8T to swap in.

From what I understand, a manual swap is possible without changing the ECU but you have to do some things to trick it into starting without being in park.

The FWD axles from a manual are different than FWD from an auto so I need to source them.

so fwd manual B4 axles? AutoZone has a good price on new axles i dont know the quality of them as ive just installed them... but, they do come with a life time warranty, so that's a plus
what about OBD2 cars? do you think its the same trick with the ECU?
i might be doing a conversion for a friend, hes got an OBD2 cab, so trying to find as much info as possible before i get myself in to this

I don't know about the OBD2 models.
You have a FWD too? I thought your B4 was a Quattro.
I'll check out the axles. The CV joints are the same I think
