No brake lights, but brake switch OK
If I press the brakes and there's no brake lights, and the car won't shift out of park, I need to change the brake light switch, right? Well, that's what I did...
It didn't work. Both switches test perfectly, but no luck. I even jumped the plug connection to the switch to make sure. Nothing.
Recently, when I put the car in park and took my foot off the brake, the shift lock solenoid would cycle on-off, on-off. I also heard a ticking (in rhythm with the solenoid) coming from behind the dashboard on the left side of the steering wheel. When I put my foot on the brake, the noise stopped. So I turned off the car, I got down under the dash and wiggled the brake light switch, and the issue went away.
A few days later, no brake lights, and no shifting out of park. Thank God the car was in my own garage, and not at work.
Is there a block relay for the brake system that might have fried? Or maybe a fuse that blew? That's about the only thing I can think of that would do this, other than the switch.
The driver's brake bulb had blown, and the filament was drooping, causing the filament to also close the circuit. It was actually a short in the bulb itself.
I swapped the fuse and it blew immediately. I checked the bulbs, found the problem described above, pulled the bulb out, and a new fuse fixed the issue.
