Audi 90 Fan belt slipping on AC

I smelled burning rubber so i checked under the hood and noticed that the fan belt was slipping on the ac, while the ac pulley would move a little than stop then move then stop etc... But i noticed when i turn the fan on for the ac/heat inside the ac pulley moves freely......whats going on? help!

Your A/C Compressor clutch is shot.

When your A/C is off, that pulley should spin freely. It is seized, and wanting to spin the compressor, even when the A/C is off.

Okay does that mean i need a new compressor? do i need special tools for anything

also any instructions on how to replace the compressor( if thats what i need to do) special tools, how to get the belt off, etc...anything helps thanks..

you can just get a belt that doesn't go thru the AC compressor. you might be able to replace the ac clutch, but most of the shops will just replace the compressor in that case. if you do decide to replace the compressor, i would recommend vacin the ac system first, then pull the compressor, replace the o-rings, install a new compressor, recharge ac.
