1990 CQ keeps popping out of 4th gear

1990 CQ keeps popping out of 4th gear
It just started happening all of the sudden. Sometimes it stays in, other times it won't. Usually pops out immediately when I get on the power/let out the clutch. But like I said, sometimes it does nothing and works fine. Any ideas?

Is this something I could possibly do on my own? Degree of difficulty? The german import shop near my house kinda bullied and burned me the last time I went so now I'm very hesitant to go back to them (read: I would like to avoid going to them at all costs)

Also, I found something kind of conflicting. http://www.wcengineering.com/articles/popout.html "The truth is, the synchronizer rings have absolutely nothing to do with a transmission staying in a gear or popping out of a gear. Synchronizers only function is to "spin up" the gears as the engagement hub approaches the gear. "
