Default How to remove dash panel above pedals?

I'm putting in a PS line that requires removal of the black panel above the driver's footwell. You have to lay in there and look up to see it - it spans the width of the footwell.

I am having a back issue that prevents my usual ballerina-like flexibility, and that dang thing is stoutly mounted. I can't even wiggle it to get a feel where the fasteners are.

Anybody know how to get that thing out, or a diagram?

Next I have to disconnect the steering joint right above the pedals, and I'm assuming I can then pull the joint/shaft away from the firewall. I'm hoping someone has also done THAT and can assure me thats what you can do. It's going to be a nightmare if the manual's casual mention of moving that joint doesn't mention THAT is a whole "pull the steering wheel and half the instruments" operation as well. If so, I'm going to roll the car on its side and work from the bottom (!).

Thanks in advance.

There are two caps/covers over two of the 4 10mm bolts might be screw or two at the base were it slides into some clips at the firewall. Be careful of the
wires there is a cover over the airbag power supply which can be removed so you can unplug it and the diagnostic connectors are also bolted to the knee bolster. Not sure I'd follow what the manual says about accessing the hose fitting from inside the car but it is just barely possibly to get at it from the engine bay, though the steering damper needs to be removed.

Really - I was wondering about getting to the hose end from the engine bay, and actually sprayed it off with brake cleaner to re-examine it better. How do I get the steering damper off? I'd love to get it that way. I was thinking of putting it up on jackstands to see what kind of access I can get from below - any thoughts there?

When I do get a wrench on the fitting, is the other end of the fitting on the steering box a fastener that must also be held in place by another wrench, or is it a cast part of the box, so I only need one wrench down there. Thanks a million in advance. I have a wracked back at the moment, so I am operating at about 50% of my normal "do anything at any angle" mode.

The damper isn't easy to remove but it can be done just two bolts. The fitting in the rack should stay in place and yes you may have a better shot from below. Once you get the nut broken free you should be able to undo it the rest of the way by hand.
