B7 S4 Exhaust Maintenance Tip & Question
Couple of months ago on hard acceleration clamp holding driver's side downpipe to the exhaust let go, hugely noisy, took to dealer and they put a new clamp on, and replaced the one on the passenger side too, as it was ready to go. More recently noticed I have a leak in driver's side downpipe in the flex joint area. Dealer quotes $1500 for a new downpipe (which they say has to come from Europe) and $600+ for labor, and if I want to do the other side two something a little less than double the cost. Looks like the OEM downpipe is available for about $1100 from other Audi dealers selling online (who quote $1330 retail). I don't know if my dealer is expensive or including some other bits, clamp, etc.
Called a Midas and they said to being car by, I guess maybe they would cut out the flex joint and weld a new one in. Car has 90k miles and is well cared for, but I think cat life can be 100,000+, and maybe this one would be on the plus side as car is well cared for. What do you guys think about letting Midas take a shot at it? I assume they would need to take the downpipe out to work on it.
On maintenance, high mile B6 and B7 folks, you might want to replace the downpipe to cat back clamps.

Update, I had Midas weld in a new flex pipe, which amazingly (at least to me) they did without taking the downpipe out, took them maybe an hour. Leak fixed and not throwing a code anymore (was getting 16815 - Warm Up Catalyst; Bank 2 P0431 - 001 - Efficiency Below Threshold - MIL ON). They charged me $250 (Stamford, CT).
