Troubleshooting sequence pointed to a weak fuel pump. Here is what I found:
The basket assembly, complete with broken retaining tabs, was sans any fuel pump. Instead, I found the pump (generic, likely one that a dedicated Audi DIYer had lying around) tucked into the corner between the basket and the side of the tank. He had wrapped and zip-tied a section of tow strap or similar around the pump which evidently served as an anti-rattle mechanism as well as ballast to keep it all from floating around. At least he had the good sense to use heavy duty strap! The return hose was not connected to the sender assembly; instead it was left lying in the tank (fuel is returned to the tank either way, right? ).
Q: Where am I going to find another basket? Even if the the local salvage yards had any, they only want to sell the whole tank.
Q: Does the pressure hose really attach to the pump with just an ordinary clamp? It seems to me that it deserves a more substantial connection, like the one at the upper end.
Q: If I secure the wires to the hose with additional zip ties, will the ones from my local hardware hold up to fuel immersion?

You could make something if you had to. Aluminum is easily formed and would support a pump/hose assembly, just use hose clamps to secure the pump to your fabricated support. Not real sure what your lid looks like, but im sure there would be a way to attach your aluminum support to the lid.
Thanks Prospeeder. I really don't want to jury-rig this but your suggestion would be far better than what was in there.<p>...but I lucked out... I got the pump, basket and sender at my local U-pull from an A6 before someone else found it. The pump looks like the original so I'll install a new one.<p>I seriously wonder though if one would really need those retaining tangs. Between the great friction fit and gravity I can't imagine that the pump would ever go anywhere. A small strap could probably be fashioned over the top of the pump as secondary protection.
