2011 A7 Steering Rack Issue

2011 A7 Steering Rack Issue
Hi All,
I have a 2011 A7 that won't start, and has been off the road for a month!
To cut a v.long story short, all electrics on my A7 cut out whilst driving, the dash went black, the wipers came on (in the sun) and I was driving the car without any info from the dash, no indicators, nothing. I drove home, turned off the ignition, and the car will not start now.
Took it to Audi, they claim its an electrical issue with the steering rack, and have quoted me £2,260 to replace it, with no guarantee that the issue would be resolved.
I've took it to smaller Audi specialist garage, they can't find the issue and want to replace the steering rack. I can pick up a second hand one for £300, but Audi may have built them to be coded one, so you HAVE to buy a new one for £1100!!
First of all, I'm hoping (desperate) to find someone who has had a similar issue, to find out the solution?
I complained to Audi, I paid £21,500 for this car 18 months ago, and don't expect a prestige motor to have a fault that costs £000's to repair, they couldn't care less.
This is my 4th (and last) Audi.
If ANYBODY can help, please let me know.
